When I reboot the physical server that hosts Virtual Server 2005 R2 the
Virtual Server service fails to start. When I attempt to restart the service
the error message "Could not start the Virtual Server service on Local
Computer" "Error 1075 the dependency service does not exist or has been
marked for deletion"

The only way to correct this is to uninstall Virtual Server and then
reinstall it.

Any help would be most appreciated.

Thanks for the help.

I checked the registry entry you suggested and it listed RpcSs, vmh and vmm.
I then checked the services hive as you suggested and all of these services
appear.

Any ideas?

May I suggest the following (log winded) steps to try to resolve.

Stop "Virtual Server" and "Virtual Machine Helper", set both to disabled and
reboot.
Uninstall MS VS, reboot.
<insert normal MS disclaimer about registry edited here>.
Check HKLM\system\Current control set\services\ for "virtual server", "vmm"
and "vmh" - delete if they exist .
Remove the "Virtual Server" key from HKLM\software\Microsoft\.
Delete any references to Virtual Server in c:\program files\ (or wherever
you installed to).
Delete any references to Virtual Server (inc .vnc files) in C:\Documents and
Settings\All Users\Documents\.
Reboot.
Install MS VS R2 to a new location (eg; c:\MSVirtServ\) and reboot after
install.
Check service status, if it's all good reboot again and re-check.
If it's still all good then you're all sorted, if not, post back and we'll
try something else...

If you are all sorted, you'll need to configure new virtual networks and
connect VM's as required, also re-do config for auto starting VM's.

Please post back here as I'm interested in how you get on...

Have the same problem. I tried every solution mentions before, whiteout any luck.

But what I found out is when virtual server is installed there is a service called vmm (virtual machine monitor) that is marked for deletion.

What I did was go to regedit and, like mattg mentioned, insert usual MS disclaimer about registry editing here. And browse to HKLM\system\Current control set\services\vmm. Delete they the key ‘Deleteflag” and chance the value of the key ‘start’ from 4(disabled) to 2 (automatic).

After I reboot the server VS was still working.
The problem is now that the key every time after a reboot reappear, so I have to delete the key every time when I reboot the server, could write a simple script for that.

I ‘m still looking for a solution for that but it’s a start to solve this problem.

Have discovered that when starting the service it returned with the error
1075. Then when I launch the VPC 2004 console and stop it and then start the
virtal server service, it starts!!! So this might then be a nice work around
for now.

I would like to add to this that I also had a similar problem. Tried all the things above. Finally ended up solving the problem with help from MS. We changed the account that the service run on from network account to the local system account. After that, the server started right up.

For some reason I ran into this problem again later and I couldn't get it to start until I reinstalled VS2005 and then made the service account change again.
