Installer Freezes when Trying to Load Windows XP Home on to Virtual PC

This is a problem about Virtual PC for Mac v7.0.1, and installing
Windows XP Home on to the virtual machine

Mac is running 10.2.8 I installed Virtual PC OK. Attempts to install
Windows XP Home result in installer hangs or system crashers when
progress bar shows "16 minute left". I have tried about 6 times, with
one or other of the above outcomes.

I have looked at Article IDs 628267 and 811267, but they seem to apply
to installing directly on Intel type hardware, not a virtual machine.
(Should there be a difference?)

In trying to register Virtual PC, I get the response that the PID I
entered gives me no support in the country I entered (UK), so I don't
seem to be able to ask Microsoft directly about this problem.

Anyone out there got any ideas?

What are you installing Windows XP Home from? Is this your own copy of
Windows? If so, did it come with another PC?

If your copy of Windows came with another PC, it's not going to work
with Virtual PC. Since MS released XP (Pro and Home), they have
required that all hardware manufacturers take steps to insure that it
can't be installed on a machine other than the machine it came with.

What this means for VPC is that you will need to buy a copy of VPC for
Mac that comes with it's own copy of Windows *OR* you will have to buy
a full retail copy of Windows XP.

I have just finished reinstalling Windows XP Home onto my Virtual PC
(though I am using 6.1.1) three days ago. During installation, the
progress bar hanged at 13 minutes for a very very long time, I mean
almost 3 hours! Fortunately, I recalled when I first installed Windows
XP Home about 1/2 year ago, the same thing happened. I quitted the
installation and reinstalled again for three times, and the hang
happened every time! Finally I decided to let it hang for a while and
eventually the bar start moving and eventually finished installation.
So this time I waited and finally the progress bar moved and proceed
the installation again. Eventually the instlalation completed after
almost 8 hours! I cannot say for sure, but I think you are experiencing
the same as I have. You might try to let it hang for a while (at least
for a couple of hours) and see what happens. Eventually the progress
bar might move right along and continue the installation.

This is just my experience of installing Windows XP Home on my VPC
6.1.1. I don't know if this will fit your need or not. But I just want
to share it with you as an experience.
