Hi,

I just got my first Apple computer. I am not familiar with this system
and need to transfer files from my windows computer. Although I have
read the help contents on this topic, I haven't been able to get my old
data into my new computer.

Old system: has a WIndows 2000 profesional OS. The system is broken
(reason I bought a MAC). I misplaced the OS disk and I can't even
conect to the internet with it. I did save the files I need in a CD
using Adaptec software. I want to transfer the files from this disk to
my new computer.

New System: Apple G5. I just installed Tiger and Virtual PC
(XP-Professional), Version 7. I encountered some compatibility problems
(as per messages I read on this news group) regarding "Virtual Switch
Networking". I also installed MS-Office 2000 Professional.

Problem: On the G5, when trying to access data from the CD that
contains data from W2K computer, I get the message the disk is not
compatible (or something to that effect). I am performing this task
within the XP environment.

I can't "network" these computers because the W2K system is broken and
does not allow me to establish a "shared" folder where I can put data,
nor it allows me to configure a network.

What do I need to do to get my data into my G5?

These tips are for VPC6.1 but should apply to VPC7.

1. Make sure that OS X can read the CD. Copy the files you need from the
CD to the G5 hard disk and check they are readable.

2. Ensure that the VPC Settings (accessed from the VPC List when VPC is
started) is set to Automatically Share Volumes

3. When VPC is loaded make sure that "Additions" is installed

The G5 hard disk should now be accessible to XP as the Z drive. You
should be able to copy the files you need to the c: drive (or better
still, create a d: drive for your data - see my previous posts)

It is possible that the CD is corrupt and the old PC is unable to write
to CD. If it has a parallel (printer) port and you can borrow and
similar PC then the old-fashioned way is to use Laplink and a parallel
to parallel cable to transfer files (ah - that takes me back a decade or
so). PC repair shops might have this capability.

Try and wean yourself off Windows - you wont regret the move to Mac.

Question is, how do I make sure OS X cand read the CD? Do I have to
"format" it using apple and then write to it the files frommy old
computer?

Pardon my ignorance but I haven't been able to initialize the CD in
Apple yet. I'm reading a lot and the transition to Apple system has
been slow.

If the CD's were burned using Adaptecs Direct CD then they might not be
readable by the Mac unless they were closed out. It used packet writing
and a format called UDF that required the UDF reader when the CD was
still open for writing.
