I'm using VPC 7, XP Professional, and MS Project 2000 and every project
file I open comes up as Read Only. When I try to do a Save As, I get a
message saying the file can't be found but the Read Only designation
goes away from the original file. When I try to do a subsequent save,
Project crashes. This happens on two different machines. Any help would
be greatly appreciated.

I had this problem and spent many hours with Microsoft tech support
trying to figure it out. I finally figured out myself that the save as
wouldn't work in a shared folder. If I moved the folder I was working
with to the C drive, it worked!

I use a d: virtual drive to store data in VPC6.1. I can also get to it
from Finder which helps with backing up and data managemnent
(see http://www4.tpgi.com.au/users/aoaug/mac_osx.html#d-drive )

With a shared (Mac) z: drive make sure that the Ownership and
Permissions of the folder you are trying to use is set to Read & Write
for everyone (use Finder, Control-click, Get Info to do this).
Additionally you MIGHT have to log into Windows with a user name and
password that is accepted by OS X - if the above tip fails.

You cannot access an external drive thru Shared Folders in Virtual PC.
You can save to any location within VPC or you can save to a shared
folder on the Mac primary hard drive, but you will not be able to
access any external source.

Additional - some older Windows programs (and DOS) are unable to use the
Mac drive due to file addressing limitations. Word 97 is one example.
