virtual serial port, or a virtual device API

Hi, I have been looking for a solution to access the guest VPC serial
port from a host Mac OS X application. Is there a method for achieving
this? My goal is to run a terminal application on my host OS X that
permits me to interact with the guest OS via a virtual serial port
connection. VPC already supports the ability to send the output of a
guest serial port to a host file. But what about enabling the other
direction too, so that the guest serial port can receive input from the
host?

Using a physical serial port isn't an option ... Apple laptops don't
have serial ports. Or should I consider using two USB serial ports,
connected by a NULL modem cable, where VPC controls one serial port and
OS X controls the other?

Alternatively, does VPC offer an API by which someone can add virtual
devices to VPC? Or is there a debug x86 I/O port, such that I can
create a communication channel between the host and guest, where the
guest issues inb and outb instructions on some port that is tunneled to
the host?
