VPC For Testing Web Development

As a Web Designer Working on a Mac (1.5Ghz Powerbook with 1GB RAM) I
need a way of testing my web creations in various browsers running in
Windows.

I'd rather not get a PC just for testing websites, so I'm interested in
Virtual PC 7.

1. Would the performance of the browsers running under Virtual PC be OK
for my requirements?

2. I'll probably install Windows XP, are there any performance
difference between XP Pro and XP Home?

3. Will Windows running under VPC use the internet connection I
establish under Mac OS X via Airport and a Belkin Wireless Router, or
does Windows have to make its own separate connection to the internet?

Something I forgot to mention. I see you comp is more powerful than
mine. You have 1.5 GHz to my 1.0, and about 25% more RAM. Your VPC
experience should be better than mine is.

I have a Powerbook closer to your specs, I have 768Mhz Powerbook G4 at
1.33GHz. Let me share my experience with you.

Windows XP Home tends to run less background services than Pro, so it

This is the best part. Depending on how you set it up, e.g. sharing
connection v. direct connection, it is definitely possible to share an
IP or have the VPC get its own IP via DHCP. At home I have an Airport
Extreme and both my Mac and VPC get their own IP. Everythine works well
including VPN to my office and Microsoft Remote Desktop. I use the VPC
overwhelmingly as a Remote Access point for my corporate network. At
hotspots, most will give you two IPs, but I have seem some access points
drop the first IP (like the Mac-side) but the VPC keeps working(?).

One more data point with IP sharing...I have a PalmOne Treo 300 that I
use to access the Internet on the road. When I do this, I switch VPC to
shared IP and shutdown the OS, restart VPC and both machines can share
the 3G wireless connection. Amazing.

Finally, I'm a Java/.NET developer, so I sometimes I run Visual
Studio.NET and other PC only utilities in VPC and I find the performance
"usable" Keep in mind, pure processsor benchmarks are a poor indicator
of overall VPC performance.
