Compact on Virtual PC, out of disk space, <1/2 disk Avail?

Source: microsoft.public.mac.virtualpc

Message:

I created a virtual hard disk using virtual PC and installed and configured
all the software we need in a baseline virtual pc. I setup the disk as
dynamic.

After installing and configuring everything, I removed the install sets from
the virtual drive and emptied the recycle bin. I ran disk defrag 4 times
from within virtual pc. I then ran precompactor, and then closed the virtual
pc and tried to compact the disk. I get an error that there is not enough
disk space to compact.

The virtual hard disk is only between 4 and 5 gigs, but the vhd file is 41
gigs. I only have 38 gig of free space and no larger volume accessible to
copy the file to, to compact it elsewhere and bring it back.

I have searched the microsoft forums and looked at VHD resizer and diskpart.
I have 2003 server R2 installed and it's diskpart doesn't seem to have the
shrink command in it.
I have searched for a newer download for diskpart to add the shrink command,
but I can't seem to find it either.

Please... Any ideas pointers or links on how I can compact this.

This was intended to be our baseline partition for our company and we were
going to base other sets from this one. It doesn't do us any good, if we
can't get the disk size down to a reasonable level on the baseline set. I
set this up using all the recommendations from Sharepoint developers
guidelines and tips at about a dozen sites.

I tried to find the right place to post this question. Under technet there
was not a category for virtual pc so I searched for Virtual PC and a few
posts were found under windows storage and under sharepoint. I posted under
windows storage and under microsoft.public.virtualpc 2 days ago, but I have
not had any responses, and today the posts disappeared. If I need to post
this somewhere else, please let me know where. I try to always search first,
and to always post, when I do post, in the correct location, so please let me
know if I am in the wrong group.

I am at a standstill on this issue, and am searching for any suggestions,
tips or recommendations.

I am running on a company laptop and my vhd file is on the external drive
bay now.

The only solutions I have come up with, are to:
1) redo the last week of work but put one install set at a time, install,
delete, defrag, compact after each one.

or
2) if that grows too big as well, redo the last week of work but make
install dvds for each of the install sets and upgrade sets and install from
the DVD's

3) try to zip pieces of windows and pieces of software on my local machine
to see if I can free up 49 to 50 gig of space. I have 12 free on my local
drive. There are 79 gig total available on the hard drive pack in the
compartment. 49 from the vhd file. 13,644 on the VMC file and 2 guid
directories that I'm not sure of their purpose, but I believe they are for
the virtual machine.
One contains sqlprov.log of 45 bytes, and the other contains 4 dlls for a
total of 2,443,768 bytes. The virtual machine is only about 4-5 gig inside
of the virtual machine. There should be a way to compact it, so I was hoping
someone would know of some work-around or trick to accomplish this.

I also tried:
I tried moving the vmc file to another volume, and hooking it to the vhd
file and exiting virtual pc.

I now have 30,274,928,640 free on d: but after the defrag and the
precompactor, the vhd file is now 49,653,938,176. Although inside of virtual
pc, the report is that 48,945,598,464 is free.

I have checked all network volumes that I can access and none has 100 gig
that I can use temporarily to compact this file.

Please... does anyone know of a workaround or even a 3rd party tool that can
help work around this problem.

Microsoft Question: Do I need to always configure a maximum size on ALL
dynamic virtual hard drives to be less than 1/2 of the total expected space
available, to make sure the compact command will be able to run when the disk
gets bloated? I didn't find this in the recommendations for sharepoint
setups or in the documentation on virtual pc.

Thanks in advance for your help.
Karen
