Everything frozen - but drive working hard

Message:

I have Virtual PC 7.0.2. The program has always been slow, but now
it's moving at the pace of a receding ice age. I installed an update
last session and wish I hadn't - it was that program to make sure
Windows was not a pirate copy. Then next time I tried to start up, the
little bubble window down in the right corner said my AVG virus
protection was out of date, and then everything stopped. I can move
the mouse, but I can't close that bubble, I can't open any other
programs, I can't get the proper menu out from the Start button -
nothing.
I can't just Quit Virtual PC from the mac, because when I start up
again, it just goes right back to that same spot and churns away.
Can I force-restart the program in some way? What's going on? Seems
like something is in an infinite loop somewhere - how do I stop it?
THANKS to anyone for the help!
Best, Jack
