PC configuration not found?Source: microsoft.public.mac.virtualpc Sent: 03/04/2007 From: (email address - cut out) Message:I'm trying to install some software in VPC and am given a message
stating:
[The Windows item could not be opened because the PC configuration
could not be found. If your PC does not automatically appear in the PC
List, place an alias of your PC document in the folder "Virtual PC
List", inside your Documents folder.]
Punctuation error besides, this doesn't make any sense to me because
inside my Documents folder is a folder called PC List and inside that
is the name of my PC sitting there as it should.
So how can I fix what "ain't" broken?
Thanks,
Gary

You need to be in Windows to install software. Sounds like you're not.

Nope, I'm using a Windows installer, and I'm running it from within

But the message you're supplying is a VPC message, not a Windows
message. An installer for a Windows app will have no knowledge of
VPC, the PC List, and so on.

Hi Steve,
Excelent point. However, the only thing I can think of is that Windows
is trying to do something with my virtual computer bringing VPC up to
make demands. Consider: if Windows needs to install something within
my virtual PC, and Windows can't find it, VPC is trying to satisfy
Windows but it can't because VPC thinks it's broke. So, it sends me a
message telling me to fix something but the thing it's trying to fix
ain't broke -- at least not in the manner that it's saying it is.
Again, VPC is saying that I need to add (at least) an alias of my disk
into the Virtual PC folder, but the disk in question is already in
that folder.
I do not know wether to blame Windows or VPC. Either way, I can't
install this program.
Best and thanks,
Gary

An interesting idea, but I doubt its the case. VPC and Windows don't work
that way. Windows has no idea what VPC is, or that it's not running on a
real PC.
VPC provides a static set of emulated hardware, it doesn't change.
What program are you trying to install? Are you running the installer from
a setup file that is located inside of Windows or on the Mac desktop?
What program are you trying to install? Is it on a CD, downloaded, etc?

Here's my theory on the problem:
1. You're trying to run an executable file with a .exe extension from
your Mac desktop. That would associate with and start VPC.
2. VPC cannot find Windows in the Virtual PC List folder, hence the
error message
3. You have Windows installed in the Virtual PC List folder and you
are currently logged into your Mac OS with another user account. That
Virtual PC List folder would be empty.
It's the only scenario that would fit what you are experiencing.

Sent: 03/12/2007 From: (email address - cut out) Message:I'm running an exe file from within Windows XP. I am not running this
from the Mac side of things. I have been working with Macs since the
fat Mac and I've been running VPC since version 3. I know the
difference between an hour glass and a spinning pizza. I know where I
am when I'm using these programs.
I appreciate your help and I do understand your confusion, I am too.
But obviously there is something else going on here. I do not have a
clue and the directions you are pointing me to are not helping. I know
you are trying to help and I do understand the direction of your help.
But again, it's something else.
Thanks,
Gary
