corrupted file - please help!

well, Windows virtual pc 7 for the mac could not start because the
following file is missing
or corrupt:
<Windows root>\system32\hal.dll.
Please re-install a copy of the above file.

--- i think i tried to install a program that was too large and it
made the pc 7 unstable.
who knows?

i checked for past info on this site, and yes! there was a dialogue
on it about 2+ years ago.... !!!

now, moving along, after making a copy into a recovery file, and who
knows if i did that right,

the info says i have to make a new virtual pc list
or soemthing like this.
but when i get into settings, and it says open drive 2 and click on
hard drive document,
its grayed out and i cannot continue....

any suggestions warmly appreciated.
im using an imac upgraded to 10.4.8
and virtual pc 7
