an OSX macbook pro up and running with all my apps do i have to start
from scratch and partiion that hard drive and re-insally all my apps?
do i have to purchase a copy of windows XP to run in the windows
partition?

Boot Camp in its simplest form is two things: A firmware update for
Intel Macs to be able to choose an OS and to run Windows. And Boot Camp
comes with a disc image of Windows drivers for Apple devices.

Recent machines may not need the firmware update. The BC firmware
update is fairly easy to install. Burning the CD image is trivial.

You can re-partition and keep your Mac apps intact. The Windows side
will be a fresh OS install and new installation of Windows apps.

You need a fully bootable install CD of Windows XP _with_ Service Pack
2. And a license to run that software.

You can not start with anything less than the above, e.g. the copy of XP
with VPC will not work. Neither will the VPC license transfer to Boot Camp.

For consumers, the easiest way to obtain a licensed copy of Window XP
SP2 is to buy a retail copy. If you are a volume or enterprise
licensee, you need the instalation media, the volume key and to account
for another copy.
