hi there. i am battling with my windows xp pro under vpc7.0.2 at the
moment. i am trying to install some windows specific software. it
downloads ok, and even extracts. but when i run setup under installer,
i get this error :

Windows Installer Error 1723
There is a problem with this Windows Installer package. A DLL required
for this install to complete could not be run.

i have looked on the microsoft developer page but it is too complicated
for me (sorry) and the thing seems to be to download installer 3 (i
have xp pro with sp1) but it crashes IE6 every time i try to download
it.

any other ideas?

This one is not a problem with VPC but with XP.

You should try the microsoft.public.windowsxp.gerneral. This is a problem
some of them are knowledgeable about.

You will not find the info on the Developer pages because this is not a
developer issue. It is a problem with a Windows Installer dll.

The best place to find some help with error messages is in the Microsoft
Knowledgebase. The article to start with concerning Windows Installer is:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/555175/en-us

When you do this get resolved I recommend that you upgrade to Service Pack 2
and make sure you have installed all updates. Windows XP SP1 is no longer
supported by Microsoft.

Windows Installer 3.1 is essential for the proper maintenance of your
computer.

You're getting the crash because the installer will not install to SP1.
You will need to upgade to SP2 first.
