How do I Close VPC to avoid loss of newly installed software?

Message:

When exiting (closing) VPC somehow it wiped out newly installed
accounting software. The few times I'd used VPC before had been with
"carry undoable changes forward" checked. However, after studying the
options at close I used "save to hard drive" instead. Next time I
opened VPC to use the accounting software it was gone - totally. Not
there.

After a two hour reinstall session it's just sitting there and I don't
dare close VPC until I find out how!!

What's the right way to close and save newly installed software????
And, later, each time it is used, to save the work therein?????

Your help will be appreciated.
Amber
