I've recently bought a Garmin Streetpilot i3 SatNav system (and very
pleased with it I am too) but currently garmin do not support Macs,
although they have undertaken to do so by the end of 2006.

To upload POIs, though, I have tried to use VirtualPC - a procedure
that garmin told me was "hit and miss" - but I have so far failed to
get it to work, mainly becuase it doesn't seem to recognise the unit
attached to the USB port. I have loaded all the drivers from the
Garmin supplied CD.

I run a Power PC 700MHz CRT slot loading iMac under OSX.4.6 and it has
USB 1.0 (I think).

Has anyone else tried VPC for this task, and if so with what results?
Did you get it to work and, if so, how?

Does anyone have any suggestions as to how I might overcome this
difficulty?

So, upgrade that hit or miss to NOT possible. Your options at this
point are to use a PC to interface with the Garmin unit. The Intel Macs
don't run VPC, but Apple recently announced updates to allow them to run
Windows XP. You might check with Garmin and ask if they support Windows
XP on Intel Macintosh systems. Be sure to turn the volume down on the
phone to muffle the screams.

You might as well be spreading the pain around since you're stuck with a
non-functioning product that requires a $1000 upgrade to work. I'd dump
the Garmin until they come out with a Mac-compatible product. But
that's just me.

Garmin will make all units, including those sold already, compatible
with Macs by the end of 2006 by issuing Mac software, so the
non-compatibility is a minor and temporary issue. Their SatNavs - at
least my i3 at least - come ready to go out of the box so there is no
installation needed to actually get them to work straight away. There
is thus no need to ditch the unit.

They update their maps annualy in February/March so I am fully up to
date and by the time the map update comes in early 2007 it will be
compatible - but I'll just have to give the Speed camera POIs a miss.

But as I never ever speed that won't be a problem! :-))

"At the moment the i3 will not interface with a MAC OS. Garmin will
hopefully have all their products MAC comatible by the end of the year.
However our engineers are still working on the software to do this, so
I can not confirm how the MAC comaptibility will work. Unfortunately
Virtual PC is not officially compatible although the situation is hit
and miss. Some customers can get it to work others can not.

To become Mac compatible it would be a case of changing the software.
So for example doing unit software updates from our website would mean
having a version for windows and a version for MAC OS. You would not
need a new unit.

I dont have the details on how the software will become available
whether it is a free download or not. This has not been confirmed."
