Is it possible to move a virtual disk file to another disk to compact it there?

My VPC7 disk file has gotten so huge there's not enough room on my system to
compact it or turn it back to a fixed-size file. I do have an external drive
with enough room though. Is there any way to tell VPC to use that disk as
scratch space when compacting the file, or to move the whole thing there and
somehow compact it from there? As if it were a different machine for
example? Or does VPC always use the current boot disk for scratch space? If
so, could I access the current VHD file if I did boot off this other disk?
