Unable to use internet from VPC-WIndows XP Professional

I'm running OSX 10.4.4 on an iBook G4. Installed VPC with warnings and
errors of the type:
(1) Startup Items Folder "/Library/Startup Items/" does not have proper
security settings - I responded with "fix" option
(2) An Item in teh startup Items folder
("/Library/StartupItems/VirutalPCOSServices") does not have proper
security settings - using this may cause problems. If you trust it,
click fix. I clicked "fix"

Then VPC discs 1 and 2 went throught their motions, but when I launch
VPC, I get the message "Virtual Switch Networking could not be started.
Permission for the support files were set properly, but the virtual
switch failed to load. Report to Microsoft, Code A1004. Virtual PC will
run without Virtual Switch Network"

In the end, VPC runs, Windows XP Pro starts, but I can't connect to
internet from IE. I can connect from Safari. I checked the DNS & IP
settings to ensure that they are set for "automatic". Also, when I
check the LAN-status, it says its connected, with Transmit and receive
numbers (very few receive numbers though compared to transmit) also
show up. DHCP is enabled, IP, subnet mask, default gatway all have
valid looking numbers, some even matching that of my windows laptop.

How to fix ?

About VPC->Info(tab)-> Networking Kext: not loaded

Network").

PC Settings (even now) are for Networking=Shared Networking (enabled).
Somehow whatever is needed to share doesn't seem loaded. The DNS/IP
entry are correctly shown set to automatic, and the IP,Subnet,Gateway
etc show what seem to be legitimate numbers.

No internet access from IE yet.

Yes, I have legitimate IP address, subnet mask, default gateway etc as
seen by running IPCONFIG /all. (Using Switched Networking-which is

to initialize vitual switch". LAN icon from ControlPanel -> Network
connectivity shows "limited or no connectivity". I still show an IP/DNS

IP, DNS etc seem to exist in both cases.

What version are you running?

Depending on how old your package is you maynot have the latest version
which is 7.02.

Check and get the upgrade if it is lower than this.

Have you tried using virtual switch instead of shared networking?

Also on the VPC have you tried doing an ipconfig /all to see if you are
picking up an IP address?

Hi everyone,
MTU workaround resulted in each working MTU becoming inoperative on
reboot. For example if 1450 worked now, and I set 1450 (decimal), then
on reboot, 1450 would not work (returns: packets need to be fragmented,
but DF set), and 1350 would work...and so on.

So I called MS support. He found that typing a numeric IP address
works, but only the www.sitename.extension doesn't work.

Final solution was to set the following:
START-> control panel -> network connections
-> Local Area Connection (right click Propoerties) -> Internet Protocol
(TCP/IP)
and manually set the following
Preferred DNS server : 38.9.212.2
Alternate DNS server : 38.9.213.2

Now the IE works both wirelessly and wired (to my DSL modem).

Thank you all for your responses and suggestions. I hope this may help
someone else. Thanks again!

God! I hate VPC -- What with all the time Microsoft expects its customers to spend fixing their bugs, I might as well go out and buy myself a REAL PC.

Why not call MS Support? They are the experts at this. VPC provides 2
free support incidents. Maybe you should use one.
