PreCompactor (PreCompact) / Virtual PC Hard Drive Document Compression

Message:

Documented steps required to successfully reclaim zeroed drive space on a
bloated Virtual PC 6 hard drive document (in this example, a Virtual PC hard
drive running Windows XP Pro):

1) backup crucial data on Virtual PC hard drive (i.o.w. backup crucial data
from Windows XP Pro), or simply make a copy of the Virtual PC hard drive
document titled "Windows XP Pro" and corresponding Virtual PC document
titled "Windows XP Pro" contained in the MAC user's Documents/Virtual PC
List folder

2) download Precompactor.zip from Steve Jain's website @
http://vpc.essjae.com (direct link to this file
http://vpc.essjae.com/precompact.zip ); if file doesn't self-extract, then
unzip to expose the core precompact.exe file

3) launch Virtual PC application; startup Virtual PC hard drive to compact
(i.e. Windows XP Pro); drag precompact.exe file from MAC desktop onto
corresponding Virtual PC's desktop window (i.e. Windows XP Pro desktop)

4) from Virtual PC's desktop window, double-click precompact.exe to run
PreCompactor program; program prepares Disk C for compacting

5) upon completion, close all windows and shutdown Virtual PC hard drive
(i.e. Start/TurnoffComputer/Shutdown from Windows XP Pro) -this closes the
Virtual PC hard drive; verify hard drive is now listed as "not running" in
Virtual PC listing; keep Virtual PC application running

6) pull down Window menu and select Virtual Disk Assistant

7) "Select Operation" window - verify that "Examine or Modify Existing Disk
Image" is selected; click right arrow to continue

8) "Select Options" window - verify that "Select a Hard Drive Image Attached
to a PC" is selected; click right arrow to continue

9) "Select a PC" window - select the PC you are attempting to compact from
PC pulldown menu; corresponding drive will self-select; click right arrow to
continue

10) "Disk Image Information" window - select "Reclaim Zeroed Drive Space";
click right arrow to continue

11) "Reclaim Zeroed Drive Space" window - click "Reclaim Space" button to
start

12) "Reclaiming Zeroed Space" window - Virtual Disk Assistant reclaims
space; wait while zeroed space is reclaimed

note: there is a possibility that the procedure will not complete if there
is insufficient free space on the MAC (our process required just as much
free hard drive space as the size of the bloated Virtual PC hard drive
document)

13) "Reclaim Zeroed Space Complete" window - procedure completes; click Done
button to quit

14) the result of this procedure may not reflect actual file size reduction
until after a MAC system restart

A special thank you to Steve Jain, Paul Power, and all the end users who
shared their results and feedback after running previously documented
PreCompactor procedures.
