I installed Virtual PC and Windows XP Professional on my new iMac G5 today -
no problems. I then downloaded the free firewall Zone Alarm, and could no
longer connect to the internet. I have been running ZA on my old Windows PC
with no problems, but could not see any setting in ZA which was affecting my
connection. I have now uninstalled ZA, and can connect to the internet
again. Does anyone have any advice either as to which settings I would have
to tweak in ZA if I reinstall it, or an alternative firewall?

In Windows, go to the Control Panel. Is Security Center listed there?
If so, you have Windows XP SP2. The would also be an icon in the
Control Panel for Windows firewall. Open it and ensure that the Windows
firewall is "ON"

If Security Center is not listed, you have Windows XP SP1. In Internet
Explorer, go to Tools and select Windows Update and then click on
Express install. That will install SP2 for you.

It may simply be a matter of tweaking the Maximum Transmission Unit (MTU) of
the Windows running in the Virtual Machine.

If so the way to do it would be to reinstall zone alarm.

Then go to Start -> Run -> Type in "cmd". -> Click OK, or press Return.

Then type in "ipconfig", press return.

Record the Default Gateway listed.

(Now we need to identify the best value for the MTU starting with 1500,
1492, 1454, 1400, 1300, etc... until we find a working value.)

Next, type in "ping -f -l 1500 (The default gateway)", press return.
EX: ping -f -l 1500 192.168.1.100

It may state at this point that, "Packet needs to be fragmented but DF set."
This indicates that the value of 1500 is too high. If it does not give the
error then you have the correct value and it should indicate 4 packets sent,
and 4 packets received.

Presuming you got the error above rerun the command as follows:

Type in "ping -f -l 1492 (The default gateway)"

Keep repeating this command until you get it to go through with the packet
needs to be fragmented error. The next values I would recommend are 1454,
1400, 1300, 1200, etc. I would not go any lower than 576 as this is the
lowest value I have found it necessary to use. The highest number that
successfully allowed the pings to succeed is the correct MTU value. You
should write down this MTU value as you will need it later on.

Once we have determined the value we would need to add a registry entry to
hard code the MTU value.

Type "exit" and press return to leave the command prompt window.

*WARNING*
The registry is an area that can cause permanent corruption within your
Virtual Machine resulting in the need to create a fresh Virtual Machine.
*End Warning*

***If you are unsure of how to perform the following steps please request
additional information and do not guess at any of the steps:

1. Start, run, type regedit

2. Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\ SYSTEM\ CurrentControlSet\ Services\
Tcpip\
Parameters\ Interfaces.
There should be several subkeys under the Interfaces key. Look for the one
that has
a DhcpDefaultGateway equal to the Default Gateway that you made note of
earlier.

3. Once you've found the correct subkey, select the key (By clicking on it
once)
create a new DWORD value in it (Edit -> New -> DWORD Value), and name the
value
MTU.

Double-click the new value, choose the Decimal option, and type the MTU
value
determined above (the one you received ping replies from).

Click Ok when you're done - you'll need to restart Windows for this change
take
effect.

Now attempt to start Windows again and browse the Internet with ZoneAlarm
running. If successful then great. Else I would recommend going back into
the registry removing the MTU value and then removing ZoneAlarm as this did
not resolve the issue as expected.
