A different internet conncetion problem

I don't understand!
I have 3 VMs each (2 in XP, one in 98) with the same problem. No
browsers can connect to the internet! At least, no flavour of IE nor
Firefox. I have seen messages about updates being downloaded
successfully, so I assumed the actual set up is working.

Today I tried something different: I opened a terminal window (DOS
thingy?) and pinged apple.com; success! Four packets sent and received.
Then I tried mac.com; four time outs
Next macromedia ... success
And finally microsoft themselves - failure!

I have the firewall turned of in windows whilst troubleshooting. I have
also turned off Intego NetBarrier on the Mac side.

My set up? A G4 iMac running VPC7.0.2 under OS10.4.4, connecting to the
internet through an airport connection to a cable modem. The PC setting
is networking enabled via "Shared Networking"

I only want to test we sites in a variety of browsers :( I can do this
by locating the local site on my HD, but this is just an annoying
niggly sign of "something not quite right"!

Thanks in advance
