Is Virtual PC what I need?

I am currently needing to either purchase a PC, or hopefully buy VPC.
What I am needing is a way to interface with different companies online
that require a Windows-based system. They say Mac is not supported. I
would also need to download Windows software from these companies, as
well as IE 6.0. I'm not sure if VPC will allow me to do all this. From
what I understand, VPC only allows access to local networks and
accessories? Or am I wrong? Will I not be able to use my DSL line to
access these companies" networks? Am I making any sense at all?

I currently have a G5, 10.3.9, that I will be adding (alot) more memory
to. I will be working online through my DSL line. Perhaps with a
network router (depends on the company), and certainly with a phone
with headphones working through the Windows system. I need a system
with XP and Office programs.

use VPC JUST to have access to IE 6.0 SP1 to access Window based
servers JAVAscripts apps that ONLY work (well) that way.
I HAVE been able to use Safari 2.0.3 to run the apps; BUT, the company
I work for specifically asks to ONLY use IE 6.0 SP1.

I have DSL and it works fine (Via VPC's Shared Network.... Virtual
Switch does NOT work in Tiger with 6.1.1).
I have no router ... but all 65535 ports are checked as "stealth" b/c I
use Brian Hill's "Flying Buttress" Firewall ; thus the Mac is the
firewall "router" for Windows. Be sure to add an anti-virus to
Windows.. I use Grisoft's AVG.

I use VPC to access all the systems and applications that are not Mac
compatible.

Microsoft offers a 30-day money back guarantee, so go ahead and try it. It
is not true that guests in VPC can only access local networks. As for a
phone with headphones working through a Windows guest you would have to give
specifics. If after trying it out you have doubts go with a PC.

The others have answered the main Virtual PC question, but in terms of
needing Office, then the Mac version of Microsoft Office is exactly the
same ... the only exceptions are that there's no Access database in the
Mac version, there's no Outlook (although there is a similar product
which may or may not be missing some features) and of course any
Windows-only Visual Basic / scripting may not work.
