After much time spent on 2 installs of XP Pro in Virtual PC (all software
has OEM on OEM Microsoft discs) Started in appx July 2005, installed XP Pro,
running about a week or so until validation process started (this was a SP1
that I Updated to SP2).
All the time on all installs, with an allocation of 512mb ram XP Pro was
dragging terribly) IT WOULD NOT go past the validation ... okay lets buy XP
Pro with SP2 OEM. Now install XP Pro SP2 ... same issue. Calls to Microsoft
Support (to some female in India) were very upsetting. She instructed me
ONLY how to bypass the authentication process but NOT how to correct it. WE
argued that she had NOT fixed anything ... but rather helped me work around a
valid Microsoft Authentication proceedure ... but that is not what I wanted
.... I wan't my OFFICIAL OEM XP PRO, with my OFFICIAL OEM Virtual PC for Mac
with OFFICE 2003 PROFESSIONAL ( now you know I've spent the bucks ) to work
as it was intended to work. I put it away for a month or more and tried all
over again ... the FIX is ... buy a FULL version of Micsoft Windows 2000
Professional .... it installed like a gem, it runs sweet and it updated
without a hitch, My choice to try Windows 2000 Professional was a decision I
made throught other sucessful experiences when I installed Windows 2000 on
older office units ... Windows 2000 is not a memory hog like XP.

and a few years later along came OS X :)

As it happens, most of my "legacy" Windows apps run fine in Win98 so it
is important for me to be able to continue to run Win98 in VPC.

Three observations for you:

1. You repeatedly refer to your software as OEM. This (VPC) is not OEM
software. If you are using a copy of Windows from a Dell PC, for
example, THAT is an OEM version. Stands for Original Equipment
Manufacturer. If you talk to a support rep at MS, they will turn you
away. You have RETAIL versions if you bought the software yourself. :-)

2. The issue with activating Windows actually lies in the connection
type that you are using thru your ISP. By default, IE receives data
from the Internet in blocks. The default size of those blocks is 1500
packets. You ISP connection is using a different size. That is why you
can connect to the Internet and browse almost any site with the
exception of MS sites, do Windows updates, activate Windows, or sign in
to any secured website. If you want to resolve the issue, follow the
steps in the article below. If not, at least you now have an
explanation for your dilemma with activating Windows.

3. When you call MS because you are having trouble with Windows running
in VPC, just tell the customer service agent that you want to speak
with a Virtual PC for Mac support tech and your experience will be alot
better and shorter. Windows in VPC is complicated and most issues
require a VPC support tech to resolve.
