VPC locks solid when trying to dial a PPP connection using USB modem

I have a new dual-core G5, Apple external USB modem, Tiger 10.4.3, VPC
7.0.2 and WinXP. I've set up VPC to use the Apple modem on Com 2. XP's
modem setup wizard sees the modem OK ("moto1_gen"; it is, indeed, a
motorola modem). But every time I try to dial a PPP connection, the
progress messages show the port opens successfully but a few seconds
after the progress message changes to "dialing", VPC locks up hard,
requiring a forced restart every time. Here's some contents of the XP
modem log:

Follow-up: I set the modem's speed to 56XXX bps (can't remember the
exact speed, but it was one of the standard speed options), but no
change in behavior. I removed and re-added the modem; same behavior. I
tried to "query the modem" from within the modem control panel; same
lock-up behavior. I just tried to dial a non-PPP (plain old dial-up
host-to-host connection) call; same behavior. BUT, I can dial a
generic modem call with Win98 just fine, proving that it's not the
modem, not the USB port, not the Mac in any way.

VPC cannot interact with the internal modem on the Mac side. You need
to add a Standard 33,600 modem on the Windows side, assign it to COM1.
In PC Settings on the Virtual PC Menu bar, click on COM1 and select the
modem.
Now, create a dialup connection using the 33,600 modem.

Thanks for your input, but I must respectfully disagree somewhat. First
of all, you will note in my original post that I'm not referring to an
INTERNAL modem (there is no such thing on a dual-core G5), but an
EXTERNAL (USB-connected) modem. And, as you will note in my follow-up
post, everything works just fine with Win98 running in (on? under?)
VPC.

I have not tried re-assigning the modem to COM1 rather than COM2,
though, to see if that makes any difference; thanks for that suggestion.

You may disagree. That's OK.

However, internal modem or external modem makes no difference. You will
still need to set it up as outlined in the kb article if you want to be
able to dial out from within Windows.

Sorry; I meant to mention in my previous posts that I have set
everything up precisely as outlined in the Microsoft article. Always
have been. That's where I started.

I have also tried COM1; still no joy. VPC still locks solid with XP.
But, as stated before, modem works fine with VPC and Win98.

So how can settings - set up exactly in accordance with Microsoft's
instructions - result in correct operation with 98 but not XP?

Tried both. I'll try 28800 next. I also just opened up Hyperterminal,
selected the port that the modem is plugged into (COM2 at the moment)
and typed ATE1 - to enable echo - but got no "OK". I then typed AT&V
(to see the current settings) and VPC locked right up tighter than a
drum. Had to force quit again.
