VPC7 upgrade disaster

Today I upgraded a reliable VPC6.1 installation to VPC7 and met with
disaster at every turn! To begin with, the software went on OK but
then I tried to import my VPC6 environment. This flashed an error
message and appeared frozen when I loaded VPC7. I kept playing with it
and was on the verge of ringing Microsoft in desperation when, without
warning, it booted up and allowed me to log in - albeit at the pace of
cold treacle. It also had a bizarre problem that was never apparent in
VPC6 that the mouse cursor would only work in the VPC window, so the
only way to return to Finder was to Apple-Tab to regain control over my
desktop.

Consulting the help files, I decided to allocate more memory to the VPC
virtual machine, so I shut down and changed the settings. Then I
restarted, to find the following error message:

Windows could not start because the following file is missing or
corrupt:
<Windows root>\system32\ntoskrnl.exe.
Please re-install a copy of the above file.

Since I can't get to a command line to install that file, even assuming
I had a copy, I thought it best to install a fresh XP session from the
VPC disks. Next problem: VPC7 upgrade disks come without XP Pro. I
have XP Pro on the VPC6 disks, but the VPC7 installer won't even
acknowledge the VPC6 disks at all!

In short, I'm totally stuffed and can't use the product at all - and
there is no undo option to return to my old version. Any suggestions
to help me recover my old XP session or to install a new one greatly
appreciated!

Andy
