Hey,

so I got virtual pc 7 with office 2004. I put in the install disc,
install VPC, restart, like normal. Anyway, after it boots back up it
asks where I want to install Windows from. I choose "Install from a
Virtual PC for Mac CD" and click "begin". Well, that's where my problem
comes in. It comes up with a window saying "Please insert the Virtual
PC for Mac install disc". So I do, but nothing happens. The disc
successfully mounts in OSX, but VPC doesn't recognize it, because it
still says "(no install disc found)".

What's the deal? I've uninstalled and reinstalled VPC many times, only
to have this happen over and over again. Any ideas? I'm becoming very
frustrated.

Did you get the version that comes with Windows? The volume license version
doesn't. There should be more than one cd for VPC if so.

I got it through my school, and the only CDs that came with it are the
Office 2004 install disc and the VPC install disc. So crap, what do I
have to do?

to install a new one. Microsoft are squarely to blame for this
impasse, so the answer appears to be either to establish a virgin VPC
shell and use an installer set of XP disks (if you have one), or to
find a way to install from the VPC6 disks (if, like me, you have
these), or to go back and try the full installer set of VPC!

My school only sells the Windows XP upgrade disc. Will that work? I
mean, it's only $5.... but still, if it's not going to work, then I'll
try and get it some other way.

The upgrade disc requires a qualifying edition of Windows (Win98,98SE,ME).
If the upgrade disc is XP Pro, you can also upgrade from Win2000. You do
not need to have the earlier edition of Windows installed, just have the cd
for the earlier Windows on hand for when the XP Upgrade installer asks you
to prove you have such an edition. You will not be able to install XP
Upgrade without such a disc.

Here we go again..........

Why is Microsoft to blame? They provide an upgrade to VPC7 so that you
don't have to spend more money for the full version of VPC with an OS.
And they also provide FREE tech support for installation and UPGRADE
issues. The problem is that you ran into trouble trying to do it
yourself and won't pick up the phone to call the experts who can walk
you through the whole process. Oh, but that's Microsoft's
fault................gimme a break

than useless! Fact remains that unless you've got the right advice (as
I got via these pages) you're not going to be able to set up a new
virtual machine with XP installation. It's an omission in their
installation instructions, and in my book any upgrade pack should
contain ALL the information needed to survive. Is that unreasonable?

Would anyone really read it? In my experience in support, the answer
would be no. Most of the questions that get asked here are either in
the VPC help, on the MS website, or have been repeatedly answered
here. So why provide a comprehensive set of documenation 90% of your
customer base won't read?
