I understand that VPC allows you to run PC-only programs. But what
about programs for which there exist both a Mac and a PC version, would
it allow me to run the PC version? I am a graduate student and all
programs made available for free by my university are for PC. So could
I run STATA, SAS, Matlab, EndNote, Mathematica etc. for PC, although
they all have their own Mac version?

I don't understand your question. VP7 is for programs that have to run
in the windows OS and the user is a Mac user. If you have a mac and
the programs that your trying to use can be used in the Mac enviroment
then you don't need VP7

I think Beat means that the programs for the PC are free whereas the
programs for the Mac cost $$. I don't see a problem running either PC
or Mac version except for the memory constraints each consume - you
only have one set or RAM (I'm assuming). Also, I wouldn't open the same
file concurrently in the PC app and the Mac app. You're safer if you
only open one at one time. Don't open the same app on either PC/VPC as
the same time. You can swap files very easily.

You would need to check with the manufacturer for each application to see if
a Mac version is available. You cant run or install pc-based applications
on a Mac.

versions floating around among students, but never a Mac version. At
the university, we have a computer lab with PC's, but at home, all I
have is a Mac. So in order to work from home, I would have to buy all
the versions myself, whereas buying VPC would allow me to use these
programs that are made available to us by the department.

But what was your reference about not opening the same application on
PC and VPC at the same time? I wouldn't do that simultaneously, but
couldn't I work on, say, a PC version of STATA at home using VPC, and
then keep working on it at the university using a PC? Would that be a
problem?

Programs running on Windows in a virtual machine should have no effect on
programs running concurrently on OS/X. It may be that doing so consumes too
many resources for either to run well, but that has nothing to do with the
fact that they might be the Mac and PC versions of the same programs. It
may be a performance issue but that is all.
