I have tried everything I have read on this and other pages, including
turning off all firewalls, (vpc, mac and netbarrier), changing VPC TPC/
DNS address to mac's instead of being automatic, changing IE LAN to
auto-detect, and turning off ivp6. Some of this I haven't really
understood, but in any case, none has made any difference.

When I try the ipconfig/all thing there is a blank after Primary DNS
suffix, so this is clearly the problem.
"Dhcp enabled" also states "no"

It can't be this difficult! Have spent hours on this, please help!

I'm on a cable modem.

Thanks, I've tried this, setting it to 1492, then 1454, and it's just
the same, unless I did it wrong, but I don't think so.

IE does different things, sometimes says "website found, loading
data..", sometimes "opening page http://....", but then takes a long.
long time to load, then ending up with "the page cannot be displayed",
"cannot find server or DNS error".

I've tried everything else I've read on teh net to solve this with also
no success.

When you type ipconfig /all, what IP address are you getting? DHCP
should be "enabled" if you're using Shared Networking.

I am getting Dhcp Enabled and IP address of 192.168.131.65.

Local Area Connection Status control panel also shows "Windows did not
detect problems with this connection". I can also receive email and
system updates, it seems, (but not send emails via SMTP). However, no
web page can be loaded.

The other major problem I am having is that VPC is incredibly,
unusably, slow, and hardly runs even the most basic of Windows
programmes, but perhaps I should make another post about this. I am
almost set to give up on it , being a very experienced mac user, but
new to this; however a friend who is more experienced with previous
versions of VPC says something must be wrong, though it is not obvious
what. I am running it on a one-week old 2.0 Ghz Imac and was expecting
very, very much more.

I forgot to add that when installing VPC, the following message

" virtual switch failed to load, inform microsoft code A1004". However,
I have not been using Virtual Switch. I did try once, with same result.

Update to VPC 7.0.2, and Mac OS X 10.4.3. You should only be getting
that Virtual Switch error if you're running a version prior to 7.0.2
under Tiger.

Assuming you did update to 7.0.2, check and confirm that you're
*running* 7.0.2. If you had moved or renamed your copy of VPC and then
applied the update, you may have two copies of VPC on your system...
one of which being the older version.

As for performance, do a google search on this newsgroup and you should
find a bunch of tips.

Thank you... my brand new Imac (latest edition) was updated to 10.4.3
almost immediately, then I installed VPC 7.0.1. (that's when the
Virtual Switch error message came up). VPC 7.0.1 then updated itself
to 7.0.2, (although it can't display web pages it can do this).

I'm sure I don't have an older version as well as 7.0.2. and IE is
still not working. I am currently awaiting a phone call call frorm a
Microsoft technician. Could it be anything to do with my ISP
(Blueyonder cable broadband: a very large on here in the UK).

As for performance, i have improved this somewhat after following tips,
but am finding that two small utilities that I particularly wanted to
use (for study purposes) and which work fine on a hardware version of
windows XP, just don't work at all. They are sound waveform displays
(scope and spectrum) which are supposed to graphically display the
sound waveform of a software synthesizer (the output of the Volume
Control mixer). They load but are unresponsive, cause the software
synth sound engine to fail and then ultimately freeze, requiring the
VPC to be turned off. Any ideas?

With updates to OS X applications it is best to remove application icon
from the Dock (just drag it off) and add it back in (drag from Finder to
Dock) after the update.

I am still no nearer a solution with this. This is despite a 45 minute
phone conversation with a microsoft technician who said he had to
enquire further and get back to me. I am just about to give up in
disgust and ask for a refund.

should be

there is just

same thing with

Connection-specific DNS Suffix . : DNS Suffix

I tried following all the advice to "manually configure the IP address
for the virtual machine" without success to the point at which it
advises":

"See the "Find Your Macintosh's DNS Server" section of this article to
find your Macintosh's DNS server, and then type it into the DNS Server
Search Order box described earlier in this article."

but as far as I can see this refers to an older OS as I cannot see DNS
Server Search Order box in Windows XP (sorry not to be a
rocket-scientist).

try going to www.red.com or www.purple.com

you most likely will be able to get to those sites. If so, follow the

Unfortunately I am in the UK, so the number you have given is
unavailable. I have tried calling Microsoft UK and spoke to a tech guy
in the Netherlands who said two days ago he would get back to me,
after he had consulted his "database". I don't know if they have
Virtual PC for mac specialists here, perhaps someone else knows.
