I've got XPSP2 running on VPC7 on a PowerBook G4. I've got 7.0.2 installed
as well. XP runs very slowly, even when optimized for performance (all the
fancy effects and graphics removed). It's really annoying. What's more, I
tried installing a Linux OS (Ubuntu) through VPC, and it failed miserably on
each of three attempts

What's your take on Virtual PC? I'm a new user, so I don't know much about
it. Should I expect crappy performance? Should I expect it not to work with
anything that's not Microsoft?

You don't give enough information on what the speed and ram is of your
powerbook so it's difficult to say if what you're seeing is normal or
not.

However, if you have given your VM the maximum amount of RAM and VRAM,
reduce them back to their defaults (or lower if possible). VMs will
perform better with less RAM assigned to them (less to emulate), and
the same basically goes for VRAM.

Read the support on Ubuntu's website, they give specific instructions
on how to install it to Virtual PC.

The important thing to remember is that Virtual PC is a hardware
emulator. Any OS that supports the hardware it emulates should run,
albeit slower than on a hardware box.

You should probably have 1 GB of RAM installed on your Powerbook to run VPC
properly, especially if you are using any Mac applications at the same time.
In any case, it will always be slow. I use VPC almost exclusively to run
one vertical market application available only for Windows. I find it
especially slow to print. However, I don't mind any of this, when I'm
waiting for VPC, I switch back to my Mac and do something else. (If you "re
using VPC in the background, be sure to set the CPU Usage Preference to
"high background use"). If you need to run multiple Windows applications or
anything that requires any kind of speed, you should be using a real PC.

I've got 1GB of RAM. It's a PowerBook 17", recent buy, so all the hardware
is in good shape. Thanks for your responses, both Unseelie and Ken! I guess
I'll have to settle for substandard performance. Meanwhile, I'll try
lowering the RAM and VRAM settings - I had them set at max. -- R.

Oh, and here is something else to look into - does your Windows
software run on Win98? Win98 runs awesome through VPC, so if you are
lucky enough that your Windows software runs under Win98 then that is
the route you should go.

I have a WinXP VPC, hacked as outlined, and a Win98 VPC. I use ESRI
ArcGIS 9.0 on the WinXP VPC because that's the only operating system it
will run on, but then have a bunch of my older games that I still like
to dust off and play on the Win98 VPC. I have a Windows 95 install
disk, but no software to run on it so I doubt I will go that far back.

As any good Windows user, make sure you get some good anti-spyware and
anti-adware utilities, and run them often. Windows is so full of holes
that it doesn't take much surfing to get a bunch of this crap residing
on your VPC and really impacting performance. I don't recommend a
firewall simply because that's one of those background applications
that can cause performance issues on a regular Wintel box, so I feel
they just cause havoc within VPC. I'm operating under the hope that the
OS X firewall is serving that function for the VPC as well since the
VPC uses the OS X network connection that goes through the firewall,
but I have no solid evidence that that is the case.

The color depth suggestion may or may not help. If you're running a
virtual machine within a window rather than full screen, the color
depth in the VM should match your color depth on the host Mac. Or
rather, if your host mac is running in millions, the VM should be
running in millions as well. There is a small, but noticable perf hit
when color depth does not match from host to guest.

If you run your VMs in full screen, this is no longer a concern.

You'd actually be surprised. I didnt think the color depth suggestions
would make a big difference either, but it did. I also don't run in
full screen mode, which may make a difference in the way VPC performs,
but that is only my feeling at the moment.
