Hello,
I was needing to create a virtual network in VPC to test an application. I
have little knowledge of networking. So is using the Microsoft Loopback
adapter the best and simplest solution to accomplish this? I saw another
solution in VPC documentation but it seemed to require fairly extensive
network knowledge. How would I implement such a network with the Loopback
adapter? I wouldn't need any actual servers to inplement would I?

It really depends on what you want the network to do. If you use the
default setting (linking the vm to the physical network) your vm is
effectively in the same network as your physical machine(s).

If your host machine in not connected to a physical network (or if you
want to create a separate network for virtual machines) you basically have
two options.

1. If you only need the vms to network with each other, use local only.
You do not need the Microsoft Loopback Adapter on the host.

2. If you need the vms and the host to be in the same network, install
the MLA on the host and link your vms to that network (ie choose the MLA
from the dropdown list).

Will that emulate a typical server-client network for testing purposes? Is
that the easiest solution considering my limited network experience, and if
so could you give some specific how-to instructions? Or would the Loopback
adapter be simplest way to accomplish what I need. I have used that before
sometime ago (have forgotton details though).

"Local Only" will connect each virtual machine's emulated network
adapter to one and the same emulated network switch, which means that
when they are simultaneously running they *can* be configured to talk
to each other.
However, this does not happen "out of the box"! You still need to set
up each guest's NIC to have an IP address and network mask that is
compatible with each other.
There is *no* DHCP server on a Local Only network that does it for
you!

So in *each* guest you need to set:
1) TCP/IP Network address from Automatic (the default) to Manual

2) Enter a valid IP address (for example 192.168.1.1, 192.168.1.2,
192.168.1.3 etc) for each guest.

3) Enter a suitable network mask (in this case 255.255.255.0) on each
guest.

Now the guests will be able to communicate over the network, but since
there is no DNC service running you cannot use the PC names, you need
to use the IP address or set up the HOSTS file on each machine to
handle name/address resolving.

Yes, local only works just like a "real" network. You can even run a
domain on it (if you don't need Internet access). All vms connected to local
only will perform as if they were plugged into a switch. The only real
difference between local only and a loopback network is that local only is
for virtual machines only. If you need the vms to also see the host (the OS
running on the physical machine) you need to use the loopback adapter.
