I was just reading the interview of Scott Woodgate by Mary Jo over at MW (
http://blogs.zdnet.com/microsoft/?p=2621 ) and this wonderful gem appears
about half way down:

"MJF: Will Virtual PC 7 be available independently of Virtual XP? Or are the
two only available hand-in-hand?

Woodgate: Customers can use Windows Virtual PC independently of Windows XP
Mode. We expect developers and IT Professionals to do this, as they do
today, and we catered to these folks by adding the commonly requested support
for USB to Windows Virtual PC."

I was stunned! I think this means we might actually get our long requested
and long denied support for USB devices in the next version of VPC.

I am now anxiously awaiting the next version of VPC to see if this actually
happens!

If you are in the Win 7 beta, that could be as early as tomorrow. The

The USB support works fine. But it DOES require Win 7. I have hardware

The Windows Virtual PC is also threaded now, so all your running VMs are no

The more I learn about WVPC, the clearer it becomes that it is NOT
competition for VMWare. It ONLY supports XP SP3, Vista and 7 as guests.
That's it - no Server 2003, no Server 2008, no Linux, no nothing. It ONLY
supports 7 as the host. It does not run 64 bit guests. If this is
Microsoft's idea of workstation virtualization, then they have completely
missed the mark. There are folks on the Win 7 TechNet forums expressing
the same feelings. WVPC is clearly intended to merely provide the "Virtual
XP" thing for 7. That it happens to run existing VHDs from VPC2007 is pure
luck, and is completely unsupported.

I am still holding out hope that we will see a "VPC2010" type product, that
is a separate product that installs on XP/Vista/7 and supports many guest
OSes. If that does not happen, then I will need to switch to VMWare
Workstation for my development needs.

You're right, it isn't, it wasn't intended to be. It isn't even
competition for VPC2007.

It's a product to specifically address the legacy applications of
people moving to Win7, that's it.

It just so happens it can do more than that, but it's not supported
for more than that.

I hope so too. Maybe adding Hyper-V compatibility in the mix as well.

Me neither, but I can't believe they think this is a replacement for
VPC2007. It is a nice little sideline, an offshoot designed for one
particular purpose. But it is far too weak to compete with VMWare
Workstation.

I think that he is right, in that there will not ever be a Virtual PC
20xx. VPC 2007 was the end of the line, in my opinion. Nor will there ever
be another virtualization product which does not require hardware
virtualization.

Will VPC 7 be developed to be more like VPC 2007? Probably.

Will there ever be a client virtualization product like Hyper-V? I hope
so.

The same features are there, the usability has changed. No drag and
drop files from host to guest...you can still copy and paste.
