Hi all,

I NEED HELP! (not me personally, but if things carry on you never know)...

Anyway, I have a Vista Business OS which i installed Virtual PC 2007. Into
this i installed XP Media Centre 2003 (all systems have current service
packs).

The Problem:
I have a trusty A3 Xerox Docuprint C20 inkjet printer, BUT vista does not
recognise the drivers (ps. there are no vista drivers availible).
So i have installed the driver into XP "which is running in Virtual PC" and
all seems to be O.K.

Here's the problem! I can not get any documents to print. In the Virtual PC
console the setting for LPT1 is set to 'physical' and the address matches
that of the host OS.

Is there a Virtual PC GURU out there who could help? before i go insane with
microsoft :o)

UPDATE: I tried "Net Stop Spooler" from the command line but recieved an
error message "System Error 4 occured", "Access Denied".

So i tried it from within the VM. The command worked BUT it also removed my
printer from my printers and faxes and said i needed to restart spooler
before i could print.

ERM...it seems i'm in a catch 22 situation, but then again what do i know!

If you do have any further advice i really would appreciate it.

Sorry it took so long to get back to you, one of my users had a
computer problem.

You need to run it from an elevated command prompt. Start menu -> All
programs -> Accessories, the right mouse click on "Command Prompt",
and select "Run as Administrator". (Then just okay the UAC prompt.)

Then type in NET STOP SPOOLER

You definitely need to do it on the host.

Sounds like you know a lot to me!

Why would you want to do that????
It will have no positive effect whatever.

The stop of the spooler on the *host* is because the spooler service
is using the printer port and while it is doing so on the host VPC2007
cannot get hold of it so it can transfer control of the LPT port over
to the guest.

The spooler may not be the only software gripping for the LPT port on
the host though. Things like software protection dongle drivers may
well also hook into the port and blocking its use from the VPC guest.

Bottom line:
You need to shut down *all* software on the *host* that uses the
printer port in order for VPC2007 to be able to transfer control to
the VPC guest.

The emulated hardware does *not* include any USB hubs or the like and

You have to use VMWare instead, they can transfer USB devices from the
host to the guest. WorkStation is the comparable product to VPC2007,
but it is not a free software.

Player is the VMWare free offer, but with that you cannot create a new
guest from scratch, it is primarily intended for "playing" what they
call "virtual appliances". These are readymade virtual machines (most
often Linux variations), which you can download and start up in
Player.
However, I believe Player can "play" a VPC2007 virtual machine, so it
might be possible to first create the guest in VPC2007, then use it in
VMWare Player. Don't know how it is converted, though (if it
automatically adds the USB part or not).

Finally, I think there are websites out there where you can create the
file set needed for a Player virtual machine. If you go that route
then you can install for example XP after you start it up in Player.
Have not tried this though, since I have Workstation myself and then
Player is not installable.

I'd like to thank everyone for thier kind help, unfortunately i haven't had
much luck and have decided to create a multi drive multi boot system.

This has now presented me with a minor issue getting the OS systems to be
seen, but i will raise this in a new thread.
