I just want to do some divx encoding and have had excellent results with
the official divx converter. unfortunately it does not work in x64 so i
wanna run an x86 xp pro image to do this.

anyone have any reasons on y i should choose one app over the other?

i'm also thinking about doing dual-boot, but with vmware or virtual pc,
i can still be online and web browsing the way i want without installing
all the software again.

Why would installation be any different? A virtual machine is just
like any ordinary PC and needs you to install the application software
you will use on it just like you would if you dual-booted or used a
physically separated second PC...
And first of all you need to install the operating system of course.

Use Vmware. You have 3 choices:

FREE:
Vmware Server
Vmware Player

$$
Vmware Workstation 6.5

Vmware Workstation 6.5 is worth the money but if you can do everything
you need with Player or Server then use those. I'm not sure if they
got rid of the console with Server since I haven't used the release
version of v2 of server. If they did then forget about it.

Vmware Player is fine but you need to download the .vdk images off the
internet since Player doesn't allow you to create them yourself.

With Vmware Workstation 6.5 we finally have 3D Acceleration support in
a guest VM but you need a fast processor and high-end graphics card to
take advantage of it.

i'm saying if i run vmware i don't need to reinstall things like pidgi
as i can run vmware while i'm on pidgin on my vista instance. with
dual boot setup, i'd actually have to install pidgin and all my othe
apps again
