Vista as Guest using Shared Networking (NAT)

Hi!

I use XP as host OS and I've installed Vista Business onto Virtual PC 2007
as a guest OS.

For some reasons - I have no choice - I must use Shared Networking (NAT) for
the guest OS (Vista). But I cannot set it up. It only found an unidentified
(or unidentifiable?), or a "local only" network. But cannot see anything from
the outer net. Nor DHCP and Fixed IP works.

I also have an other virtual machine - that is an XP - with the same shared
networking settings, and that's working well.

I'm not an expert in administrating windows networks, so please if anyone
could help me out with a step-by-step tutorial, I will be glad.

That is odd. I can't check it out because I run the other way around (XP
in a vm on Vista Business host) but it should work.

The other option is to run ICS on the host and share the host's Internet
connection that way.

Hello,

I have the same case as you - Windows XP as host OS and Windows Vista as
Guest OS on MS Virtual PC 2007 and I managed to enable the Internet
connection on the guest OS. What you need to do is:

1. Install MS Loopback driver.

2. Install "Virtual Machine Network Services" on your primary Internet
connection (not the Loopback connection).
(PrimaryInternetConnection>Properties>InstallButton>Service>AddButton>HaveDiskButton>%ProgramFiles%\Microsoft Virtual PC\Utility\VMNetSrv\VMNetSrv.inf)

2. Enable "Internet Connection Sharing" on your primary Internet connection.
(This step will change the TCP/IP settings of the Loopback connection to
192.168.0.1)

3. Open the settings of the Virtual Machine (in MS Virtual PC 2007) and go
to Networking. Set the Adapter 1 to "Shared networking (NAT)".

4. Start the Virtual Machine and make sure the internet connection on the
Guest OS uses DHCP.
