Virus/firewall required for Win311?

Host XP SP3 Home Guest Win311WFWG.

I have a nicely functioning Win311 with normal internet access. Browsers
include IE3.01 and Netscape 4.08. POP email uses Pegasus 3.12.

This may be a silly question but is a 16 bit environment any less likely
to receive viruses and spyware than 32bit? Of course in those days it
was not such a big thing to have all these internet security apps. so I
can see why there is very little virus/spyware software about. I have
found an old version of Avast but have not been successful in installing
it properly. There is also a link to virus defs but have not gone far
enough to see if they are maintained and up to date.
Do I also need a firewall? I have not found any at all so far, and there
are some very comprehensive Win311 sites out there.

Question: do I need this protection with Win311? If so am I more/less
likely to get infections than with normal 32bit OS's?

ps A note to Steve Jain...I have now opened my eyes fully and found the
wonderful connectix user manual on your excellent site. Thanks again.
