Faxing from XP Virtual PC

In its infinite wisdom, Microsoft does not include fax support in Vista
Home Premium. My existing fax software does not work in Vista. So I
downloaded Virtual PC, installed XP, and attempted to install the XP fax
driver.

It appeared to install properly using a "Standard 56K Modem Driver".
The modem dials correctly and establishes communications with the remote
fax machine. However, every time I try to send a fax, it aborts after
trying to send the first page.

My main questions are: Should I use the standard 56K modem driver or
attempt to install the driver for my actual modem?

In Vista, the modem is on COM3. VPC only supports COM1 and COM2. I have
mapped the modem to COM3 in the Settings dialog. Is this the way to go?

I don't do a lot of faxing so I don't want to spend lots of money on
Vista fax software.

I stumbled upon this bug at the very end of the VPC2007 beta testing
in beginning of 2007 and my report did not get into the bug database
in time for MS to fix it for the release....

What happens is that some RS232 software (ours for example) did not
properly get the notifications from Windows on arriving characters in
the serial port. Since our software is event driven on the receive end
it did not work when running in VPC2007, but it does in VPC2004.

I did not check weather this was connected to the additions though.

But I did make a change in the software by adding a timer running at
50 ms interval and in the timer event I harvested the data in the
seral port in queue and then called the same processing as would be
called from the OnRxData event on the com port. THen the software
started to work also in VPC2007, but the 50 ms latency is not possible
to keep, so it was just an experiment to check if the data had
disappeared or the event was not triggered. It was the latter.

Obviously the OP cannot change the software he is using so that is why
I suggested he shopuld test VPC2004 instead of VPC2007. After all he
got VPC just to run an XP client he can fax from...

Note:
I have not checked this when using Vista as a *host* like the OP does,
I don't have a Vista PC myself. I only run Vista in guests in
VPC2007...
