Hi,
I derived a new vhd from a base image. Now I want to move both the new
and base images to a new location, but I cannot find the reference of
the base image from the vhc file of the dervied image so I am not sure
if I can move the base image. If I move the base image to somewhere
else, how the dervied image locates it? Can I move the base image?

Normally when you create a guest you create one Virtual Hard Disk file
(*.vhd) and one Virtual Machine Configuration file (*.vmc).
These are the only files needed to define a guest and in fact the vmc
file can also be discarded as long as the vhd file is retained.

If you want to move a guest from one system to another then what you
need to do is copy/move the vhd file to the new system. Then in the
VPC2007 console on the new system, create a *new* guest and when the
wizard reaches the hard disk step simply point to the copied/moved vhd
file and you are done. Simple as that!

Although not tested I think the differencing disk will store both an
absolute path as well as a relative path to the parent. When you move
both, Virtual PC will use both paths to find the parent. If that fails
it will probably look in the current directory as well and in the end
may even ask you for the location of the parent.

Basically, don't worry.

It may not work to just start VM if there are multiple levels of differencing
disks and moved them to different locations. You would have to use the
Virtual Disk Wizard and cancel the last step that asks you to merge the disks.
