the specific hardware.

Message:Correct. You cannot change the emulated hardware in a virtual machine. The
mouse is, as others are trying to tell you, a PS/2 two-button mouse
regardless of what you have on the host. You can change the mouse settings
in the vm but you cannot change anything by installing the driver for your
real mouse.

Yes, but the OP is only complaining about the mousewheel. For me this works out
of the box. Specifically I just tested:
Windows XP x86 host with PS/2 mouse (through a KVM)
VPC 2007
Windows 2000 guest
VM additions applied
But as far as I recall, the mousewheel works in all my VM's.

I just checked.
Vista Ultimate 32 bit with Microsoft Standard Wireless Optical Mouse (USB)
VPC 2007
Windows ME guest w/all updates and VM Additions
-or-
Oberon System 3 rel 2.3.6
The scroll wheel works in Windows ME and the wheel button works in Oberon.
The wheel button may well work in ME but I can't think of a program that
I've got installed on it that uses it.

I haven't figured it why - but the scroll wheel works if I Remote Desktop to the virtual machine, but not if I am using the virtual machine directly (in full screen).
Virtual Machine additions are installed. Virtual PC 2007 SP1 on Windows XP Pro SP2 with Windows XP Pro SP3 as the virtual machine.

When you RDP to the virtual machine you are using the XP-Pro RDP
system for desktop remoting including the mouse functionality
transfer. This is *not* done via VPC in this case.
The mouse emulation through VPC2007 and via the VMAdditions are only
used when you interact with the guest via the VPC *console*. The
limitations I guess are due to the fact that the VPC system has to
emulate at a level where all possible guests can be used.
RDP on the other hand has a particular operating system to deal with
exclusively.

Gary is right! I tried "to be more aggressive with the scroll wheel" and it worked... I'm using a Microsoft Wireless Laser 6000 v2
I've adjusting the scroll wheel settings to compensate with scrolling more lines per "aggressive scroll"
I also noticed that the keyboard, if you press and hold the space bar, has a slow repeat rate, probably due to the VM's design to minimize performance hit to the host.
Thanks Gary!
