Kubuntu 7.10 install in VPC2007

I have tried to install Kubuntu 7.10 into VPC2007 and after looking
through the advice concerning Ubuntu and Kubuntu on this newsgroup I
have succeeded in installing it and booting into the desktop for the
first time.

So now is the time where I will have to set the permanent changes to
the grub boot parameters and I will have to become root.

Here is the problem (which is not really a VPC problem but will not be
as apparent if Kubuntu is installed on a "real" pc where the boot
options do not need to be changed):

During the install there was *no* place where the root password was
entered and now I have only my own user account (which was asked for
during install). But this account is not allowed to save the edits to
the file /boot/grub/menu.lst....

So I tried to su to root using a blank password and the password of my
own account, none worked.

Is there anyone here who has experience with Kubuntu and can tell me
what to do to fix the root login problem?

Apparently Kubuntu has disabled the root account so one must use a new
construct called sudo instead.
Basic problem now solved. Kubuntu is running fine in VPC2007. :-)

Most times I have used *ix the way to raise priviliges was to do su.
From the Ubunto website it looks like sudo is a Ubuntu thingie, so if
one has not touched ubuntu before it is not obvious.

Anyway, my box is now running and can do a hands-off reboot without
losing video or mouse capabilities.

By the way, do you know how to enable the mouse wheel inside Kubuntu?
(When running in VPC2007, that is).

Don't know about Ubuntu, but for Fedora it's kernel option
"psmouse.proto=imps" (source: vpc.visualwin.com, the notes on FC5, verified
on FC5/ FC6/ F7/ F8). If it doesn't work as a kernel option, I think it can
be added to xorg.conf in a "Device" section for the mouse; I remember
reading something to that effect some time ago, but I can't find that info
now.
