Host Key and Basic Usage

After getting extremly frustrated trying to get any information on how to use
virtual pc. I tried to call microsoft and find out they just have a answering
machine that likes to ask a bunch of questions then tells you to call another
number. Then to ask them a question via email you have to pay 60 dollars.

All i want to know is how to use this stupid program on the stupid vista
operating system that i'm forced to use.

How can microsoft make a program release it and then have no instructions on
how to use it. I went to the help file and i don't know what the hell a host
key is. Is that the windows key? so i'm stuck in a virtual pc till my screen
saver comes on then i have two mice arrows. Now i can control my host pc
again.

Is there a basic run down on how to use thier f*ed up software? When will
vista run all the xp programs? Why am i forced to use vista on my new pc's
when i buy them when vista is obviously not ready. The fing thing crashes
alllllll the time. My monitor goes black for no reason and i have to hard
boot. The operating system requires so much resources that what's the point
in having a faster pc.

I'm going to go build a 500 dollar pc put xp on it and it'll most likely be
faster and more reliable than vista.

Screw it i'm getting a mac. at least apple answers the phone.

Geez, all that effort and you expend absolutely none of it to just go
look in the options for the program itself. Many, if not most,
programs have options to alter their behavior. You should be used to
configuring options by now for several applications (probably for all
your applications). So what do YOU see when you use VPC's File ->
Options menu? Now that you have that window displayed, take a guess
at which category on the left list might relate to the keyboard. Yep,
there it is.

Yeah, don't bother searching the program's included help. Help ->
Virtual PC Help, search on "host key", first topic is "Using the
keyboard", right after the table showing key combos is "For
information about how to configure Virtual PC to use a different key
as the host key, see Managing the use of the keyboard with virtual
machines" (which has a link), and which leads to a description of
using Alt as the default host key. That took far less time than to
write this one paragraph.

And, of course, you obviously haven't even bothered to install the VM
Additions into the guest OS to allow your mouse to move in and out of
the VM's window without ever touching the host key.

This from a user that takes a series of wrong turns and heads off the
wrong way and then blames someone else for their screwup. So what
mandates that you use VPC? It sounds like you don't have any
initiative to investigate the software so you should let someone else
set it up for you, or forget virtualization altogether and have
someone provide you with multiple pre-built computers with the OS and
all applications already installed and then walk you through the
configuration of each application.

How is it any OS maker's fault that *you* don't adequately research if
your software will run under a different version? You are another
clueless user that goes buying an OS without knowing whether or not
their applications will work with it.

And just who is pointing a gun at your head to force you to use a
particular operating system? Do you need us to dial 911 to get the
police to rescue you?

Vista is ready for applications that *support* it. It is YOUR fault
for dragging old applications into Vista that won't run under Vista.
I also bet that you went with 64-bit hardware and have the 64-bit
version of Vista installed when you should have installed Vista x86
(32-bit) on your 64-bit hardware until you upgrade your old drivers or
applications to versions that support Vista x64.

Yeah, why am I not a surprised?

So how many problems are you going to try to address within a single
post? Bet you haven't even bothered to check the Event Viewer for
errors. Or tried installing a Vista-compatible video driver.

Name one operating system that adds lots of "features" (whether wanted
or not) that does not consume more disk space, memory, and CPU
resources. Operating systems expand based on what hardware becomes
available, just as have applications. You think the games of today
would run well or at all on that decade-old computer you had before?
Did you not even bother to read the *recommended* hardware
configuration for Vista? Or maybe you bought a pre-built but decided
to go cheap (as evidenced by your next comment) so it doesn't have the
oomph to run a more resource-hungry OS. *YOU* picked the wrong OS and
probably went cheap on the hardware, of course, it is someone else's
fault.

So you are going to install a different OS but still run the same
program on it that you couldn't figure out before. You could go free
and install a Linux distro but I pity those newsgroups when you show
up there.

And what virtualization software will you run there that you will
continue to not bother looking at the options already included in the
program to configure it? Gee, you really think all those Mac programs
do not have configuration options?

So it really wasn't the program that was stupid, was it? Yet another
red spot on your forehead after slapping yourself and saying "Doh!".
