Is it possible to access the virtual drive of my virtual machines from
outside of the VM? I'm running XP64, and I have a VM running Win2000. It
works surprisingly well, but it would be handy sometimes if I could get to
it's C: drive from XP64. Is this possible?

and I see port 445 is open (why on earth is port 445 open?). But no shared
resources. I can get out of the vm, but not back in.

If you download Virtual Server and install it on Vista Ultimate or Vista
Business, you can use the vhdmount.exe
utility to mount a vhd file and have it appear as if it was just another
hard drive on your computer.
You can't mount a .vhd file while it is being used by Virtual PC though.

If you had two physical machines, how would they communicate? Just use the
standard networking protocols or, if you don't fancy that, open up the help
file and do a search for Shared Folders...

No, no error messages, it just times out if I type in the full path,
\\10.0.0.146\c. This works on my other boxes. I can ping it ok. If I drill
down through My Network Places, I can see it, but it's shared drives don't
appear. My other machines appear there also, with shared drives. It's as if
the shared drive is being blocked or is otherwise not really shared.

If I do the same thing on the VM, I see it with it's shared drives (which
tells me the drive is properly shared), along with my other machines and
their shared drives.

I gave up on Netbois when I gave up on Win98 :). I share via tcp/ip. Works
great for all of my boxes. With the VM, the drive appears properly shared
within the VM, the box is visible outside of the VM, but the shared drives
themselves are not visible outside of the VM

For folder sharing to work, make sure any software firewall running on
your host OS (and in your guest OS if you have a software firewall
running there, like maybe the Windows Firewall), make sure ports
137-139 and 445 are open. These ports are used by the "Browser" NT
service for the NetBIOS datagram, name, and session services and for
SMB direct via TCP.

In the Windows Firewall, look under Exceptions. As I recall, they had
a single entry to enable folder sharing that opened these 3 ports (and
445 for microsoft-ds). Some software firewalls also have these ports
grouped under "File/Folder Sharing" when configuring them to open
[sets of] ports. Before Windows 2000, SMB was over ports 138-139
using NetBIOS commands. Then direct SMB via TCP was made available
over port 145. See http://ntsecurity.nu/papers/port445/. While you
may enable these ports over your intranet hosts to let them share
folders, your router's firewall should still block all these ports.
