I have installed VPC2007 on both my laptop and a P4 2GB Ram system. On both
machines, I monitor CPU temp using Speedfan. When VPC ids running, the CPU
temps increase dramatically. On the P4 system for example they go from 45 to
85 deg C within a matter of minutes, starting alarms along the way. Turn of
VPC and they drop.

Has anyone else seen this and if so what can be done about it.

That's pretty much expected, you're running a lot more on the machine
when you're using VPC, but make sure you have the additions installed
in your guest VM's, that will make a difference.

As you have the same problem on two different hosts, I suppose that you have
a problem with the virtual machine that you are running who is making the
CPU running at a high level for an extended period of time. Example of such
situation:

1- You are running a DOS application without the VPC 2004 addition for DOS.

2- You are running a Windows application but with too little memory
allocated to the guest. For example, when I try to run an Access 2007 ADP
project on a WinXP virtual machine with 256Megs, the CPU usage goest to the
roof and remains there even if I do practically nothing with the
application. If I increase the memory to 320 MB, the CPU usage is less
dramatic but it's still very high for extended period of times why I try to
do anything with the project.

Of course, it's also possible that in both cases , you have set manually the
speed of the CPU fan to a very low value in order to have quiet machine. If
this is the case, your machine(s) might be quiet at this moment but the CPU
could also eventually burn; something which will give you an even quieter
machine.

Speedfan can change the fan speeds so of I were you, I would take some
serious precautions before running this kind of a program on my machine.

That is to be expected, I would think. The processor is now working much
harder, especially when a vm is running. I haven't monitored the
temperature, but the fan certainly runs faster.
