it's 6.4 GB. is there anything else i can do to get the size down?

Delete files or applications you don't need out of the VM, then do the
defrag, precomact, and compact again.

If the .vhd is on a NTFS partition, you can use NTFS compression on it
and that will help.

No, Vista uses up between 6 and 8 Gb of disk space just to install!
Thus the disk file won't compress further.
Talk to Microsoft about bloatware....
