Strange networking problem all of the sudden. Any ideas?

I have had a guest OS (Win 2000) running in VPC for months now. My laptop
has a host OS of Xp.

Today, my Guest OS booted normally, but then I couldn't get to the internet.

I finally figured out that something strange is happening. I DO get an ip
address, but I can't ping that ip address, and I can't ping even the DHCP
server where I got the IP address.

Does anybody have any idea how I can get an IP address from my DHCP server,
but basically not be able to talk to any other system at all.

I typically use Wireless, but reconfigured and used wired networking. The
exact same thing happens.

Please send a confused person any ideas. I know that as of Monday, I'm
going to have to try to save everything off of my host and guest system and
just get 2K installed if I can't figure out what it going on.

I tried creating new VPCs and they have the same issue.

The native OS is fine (I'm sriting this from my native OS).

No, but are you sure you actually received a DHCP address? Which one
did you get?

How is your host network configured? Note that wireless NIC:s have
problems with VPC guests, I have seen that a guest can get a valid
address via DHCP on one WLan and not on another depending on the DHCP
server settings and the host network adapter settings.

Then it is probably a change in the external networking system or a
Windows Update on your host that destroyed the Virtual Machine Network
Services connection to your host nics. Check the host NIC properties
and verify that these services are enabled on both the WiFi and wired
NIC:s.
Also try reinstalling VPC2007, it will not touch any of your guest
systems.

Yes, I'm sure it is not the autoconfig address. I also got the autoconfig
address when I unplugged the wired cable. I'm actually getting 192.168.0.6
from the DHCP (192.168.0.1). When on wired, I'm getting 192.168.2.5 (I use a
separate router for wired and wireless (long story).

Well, since I was working on both wired and wireless as of Tue, and then
wasn't on Fri. (and I didn't do anything to the config), I'm pretty sure I'm
OK as far as that goes.

I was wondering if it was a windows update of some sort. They get pushed by
my company, so I'm not sure if I can figure out what they did.
How do I check the NICs for those services being enabled? I see a lot of
properties (I've looked at those a lot), but don't know where to find those
services.

I will probably try re-downloading and installing VPC tomorrow. That's
probably a good idea. Thanks, Greg

In the properties of your LAN card (on the host) there are a number of
listed "items" with checkboxes. One is named:
Virtual Machine Network Services
Make sure the checkbox is checked, otherwise this NIC cannot be used
by your guest machine.
