Hey all, I am running Vista Business and downloaded VPC. Do I have to have
an extra copy of Vista to setup a new Virtual PC? I thought I could use my
main OS files from the installed set or do I need a whole separate ISO?

The difference here that IM asking about is that before when running it on XP
Pro, it just found the image from my host computer without the CD and built a
new OS from there. THis time on Vista its looking for a bootable CD and I
was thinking I could just copy my image from my main drive and build it.

IM not sure what is different.

Almost every question ever asked in here can be answered with "How would I
do this on a physical machine?"

If you went to your local PC shop right now and bought a brand new physical
machine with no operating system bundled with it or installed on it, could
you legally install your existing copy of Vista on it? Or your existing copy
of XP? Or your existing copy of Office?

Virtual machines are absolutely identical to physical machines in every way,
other than they are made of software instead of hardware... The software (OS
and apps) will generally speaking not have the slightest idea that it's
being installed on a virtual machine as opposed to a physical machine - it
simply doesn't need to know this...

That's why, e.g. virtual machines which are connected to the Internet need
their own anti-virus software - the host won't protect them...

It must have either been pointing at an ISO somewhere, or the OS CD must
have already been in the drive - VPC can't create a new virtual machine from
the OS running on the host...

virtual machines running VISTA. We were running on the "grace period" but
have hit the point where it won't boot w/o being licensed.

I read -- in PC World magazine -- that we can install an OS onto the virtual
PC using our host OS's CD (or DVD) and uninstall/reinstall again prior to
the 30-day activation time limit. In your opinion, is this viable, legal?
Apparently it works and I hope the magazine's author didn't steer us wrong.
