Installation Questions from a novice

I've only just discovered Virtual PC and thought all my Christmasses had
come at once. I have a new PC with Vista Business and would like to be able
to use some of my Vista-incompatible software such as Nero 6. I have
downloaded and installed Virtual PC and created a virtual disk, however I
don't seem to get the opportunity to install XP from my XP OEM disk. The
message I get is "Reboot or select proper Boot Device or insert Boot Media in
selected Boot Device". I have followed the instructions but am stuck.

Also, if I ever get it working, how do I install my old software so that it
runs via XP in the Virtual Machine?

ignorance again, but if I run the XP setup process from within the Virtual
Machine will XP be installed on my virtual disk? I stopped it because I was
afraid that it might be installing on my C: drive and would interfere with
Vista.

Part 2 of my question remains: how do I install Nero 6 etc.? Do I install it
on C drive or on the virtual disk?

What happens inside the virtual machine window stays there. It does not
affect the host.

Nero will not do you any good if installed in the guest. The guest cannot
write a cd or dvd. The emulated optical drive is read only.

A virtual machine is an island entire of itself. Whatever you install on it
won't affect your host. Conversely, anything installed on your host won't
affect your guest, which is why you need to install AV software on virtual
machines (which connect to the Internet) just as you would on real machines.

Also bear in mind that, apart from certain circumstances, virtual machines
are considered as real machines when it comes to software licensing. If you
build three guests and install XP on them, you need three XP licences...

Apart from the CPU, all of the hardware in a virtual machine is emulated.
E.g. it makes absolutely no difference what graphics card your host has -
guests will only ever see an S3 Trio...

The emulated optical drive on a guest is a CDR, not a CDRW, so Nero isn't
going to be very much use to you...

XP OEM installations are usually bound to the machine they are first
installed on. You cannot use the CD to install XP on a different machine
(including a virtual one)!

I doubt that you will have much success with Nero 6 in a virtual
machine. The emulated CD/DVD drive in a vm is not write enabled.
