Invalid host??? Newbie definitely needs help on this one.

Message:

I set up WSS 3.0 on VPC 2007 running MS Server 2003 R2. My Team Site shows up
on the VPC as http://dan-vpc1/default.aspx. On my DNS on the VPC, my site is
dan-vpc1.dwy.com. When I try to access My Team Site via IE on my host machine
- if I use http://dan-vpc1/default.aspx - I get a diagnostic that this is an
invalid host name. If I try to access My Team Site via IE on my host machine
using http://dan-vpc1.dwy.com/default.aspx - I get the page you are looking
for cannot be found error.

I have gone through the DNS configuration on the VPC over and over again.

Why is My Team Site URL "http://dan-vpc1/default.aspx" and everywhere else I
look in DNS, it is dan-vpc1.dwy.com? How do I get this to work so I can
access My Team Site from my Host machine via IE?

Thank you so much for helping me...I am a newbie at setting up SharePoint,
but I am learning a great deal in the process.
