What do you want to accomplish? If you want the virtual machine files for
the virtual machines you plan to build to be on an external drive then that
is easy enough to do. In fact you can set the MYVIRTUALMACHINES
evironmental variable to point to a folder on any drive you wish and all
your new vms will be created there by default.

How do you set that variable? Where is it stored? That would be really
useful as I keep my VHD's on a second hard disk and everytime I create one I
have to transfer it from the 'my virtual machines' folder.

At the time you create a new vm with the New Virtual Machine wizard you can
browse to any location in your file system as the location for the new vm.
You do not have to "move" the vm after the fact.

These instructions vary slightly depending on the host OS.

You create the variable MYVIRTUALMACHINES in System Properties. To reach
System Properties, right click on Computer and select Properties on the
context menu and then Advanced System Properties. Select the Advanced Tab
and click on the Environmental Variables button. In the lower section
(System Variables) click on the New... button. Type MYVIRTUALMACHINES in
the top box and the full path to the folder you want to store new vms in the
lower box.

I did have a trawl through the rigitry before looking for path settings
there's usually an easy fix lol and I never go looking for it I always look
for the hard way.
