Hi

I can't seem to access any USB devices in VPC 07 (apart from a shared folder
to a memory stick).

Does anyone know whether this applies to all Vista OSs, or just those with
certain unsupported USB devices?

Is there a way around this, or are there previous versions of VPC which run
on Vista but support all USB?

Any special patches out there Bill?

separation of the physical world -vs- the virtual world,...how long would it be
before we created something that becomes a security risk and a thorn in our side

whatever "evils" that happen in the virtual world do not escape into the
physical world and the damage is eliminated by simply dumping the guest without

want USB for would destroy that separation because they expect the guest OS to
directly ackowlwdge/load/use whatever physical Device they plug into the
port,..they aren't wanting device emulation, they want the device itself,...it
just doesn't work that way and should never be allowed to work that way (IMO)

What good is USB even going to do? Even if it acknowledged the USB port it
isn't going to do anything with what you plug into it because there would have
to be a comparable device "emulated" by Virtual PC. It is just like the Nic
cards,...it doesn't matter what kind of physical Nic is in the machine it always
shows up as the same Nic that is emulated and presented to the guest OS. So what
would they emulate? A generic Camcorder?,...a generic Webcam?, a joystick? No
matter what they emulate it is never going to have all the featrues and
functionality of whatever "real" device you plugged into it. External Drives?,
Thumb Drives?,...no need,...the sharing features of VPC already deal with that
and so does the ability to Drag & Drop between the Host and Guest's "desktops".

Printers might be the most valid, but all that is needed is a way to "mate" the
virtualized LPT port to the physical Host's printer connection. So it will just
work over a virtualized Parallel Port Printer connection.

I would like to see USB support as well,...but a lot of thought has to be put
into what that really "means".

Think about how VPC actually works. The guest OS never ever ever sees the real
physical hardware.

Your actual hard drives? No, it sees the VHDs as drives

Your drive controllers? No, it sees only the emulated ones.

The Floppy Drive? No, it only sees the emulated drive or image file.

The CD Rom? No, it only sees the emulated drive or an ISO file.

Serial Port, Printer Port? No. They are emulated and link to the Physical one
or to a "file".

Mouse? No. It sees the generic emulated mouse no matter what brand is physically
connected to the Host PC

The Tape Drive? No. They would have to build an emulated "generic" Tape Drive
into VPC that would be "linked" to the physical drive,...unfortuneately there
are dozens of Drive Formats, Tape Formats, Tape capacities. It would probably
only be possible if the emulated Tape Drive and the Physcial Tape drive were
based on the same Tape Format and Tape Capacity,....and what is the chance MS
would choose something that would keep everyone happy?,...forget it,..never
happen.

That's because VPC doesn't support USB...

All OS, not just Vista...

Not with VPC - VMWare has some USB support...
