Hello,

I have got a guest OS which is a Windows XP Tablet PC Edition and I have the
following problem.

When using the VPC from an account with administrative rights (Host) I can
ping any ressource in my network as well as doing any other network action.
This works with NAT or with sharing the real connection.
But when I start the VPC from a restricted account (User) I cannot ping any
host when using NAT for the VPC. But for my surprise a ftp or http connection
will work.

To me this is really strange but eventually anyone has an explanation!?

i got an answer from the 'Virtual PC Guy'... very kind of him - thanks man!

I could not believe what he wrote me so I will share this with the community.

This is expected behavior. Without administrative privilege we cannot ping
using shared networking - but everything else should work.
....

I cannot see any sense in this behavior! When this es a security 'feature' I
can exploit it very easy by switching the networking option to NIC sharing.
And why only Ping? Any other access will work and there is much more
potential for doing bad things.

If anyone has any suggestions on that PLEASE tell it.

For me that means that I switch back to VMWare :( - sadly because I just
finished some internal testing with some of or users and they/me like MS VPC.

If you want to be able to contact the host machine from the guest, do not
use Shared networking (NAT). As you point out everything works normally if
you link the NIC in the vm to the physical NIC of the host (or a loopback
adapter on the host).

Shared Networking (NAT) is a quick and easy way to give a guest machine
Internet access. If you want a standard network connection between the guest
and host, use one of the other methods.
