VPC Internet connection problem

I have a dual boot machine with XP Pro & Vista Ultimate. I have installed
VPC on both the systems and the one in Vista works fine and connects to the
internet but the VPC on XP Pro does not seem to connect to the internet -
unable to connect to websites.

Internet connection is via LAN and on checking the LAN connection status
everything is identical on both installations except for the IP address
which is 192.168.1.8 on Vista and 192.168.1.7 on the XP installation.

I guess there something very basic that I am overlooking and hope someone
can point me in the right direction.

The fact that it is a virtual machine does not make any difference to the
way networking behaves. You just use the normal networking troubleshooting
methods. Does it have the correct netmask, default gateway and DNS address?
Can you ping your local router? Does nslookup work?
