Hi!

I have noticed a strange behavior in Virtual PC 2007 running on Windows
Vista Business. When I start it, it always appears in the system tray. Then,
if I right click on the icon and select the "Show Virtual PC Console"
command, the program is shown in the Taskbar, but it is minimized and I'm
unable to restore the normal window: in fact, if I click the "Virtual PC
Console" button in the Taskbar, the program is moved again in the system
tray.

I have tried to completely uninstall and reinstall the product, but the
problem remains. Any idea?

Maybe the window is set to display itself out of the visible screen. Take a
look at the file:

C:\Documents and Settings\__Name_Of_Your_Windows_Account__\Application
Data\Microsoft\Virtual PC\Options.xml

and make sure that the values for the <console> section are reasonable. For
example:

<console>
<height type="integer">575</height>
<left_position type="integer">0</left_position>
<top_position type="integer">0</top_position>
<visible type="boolean">true</visible>
<width type="integer">359</width>
</console>

** Don't forget to backup this file first if you want to edit it. **

Thank you for you post. It started me down the path of modal forms appearing out of the visible area. My case was dual monitors. I had to reset my #1 & #2 monitors in order for the modal forms to display.

Lifesaver! The Option file was the answer for me too. The positionin my file was about 4500000000000, and the Virtual PC application remains in the minimized state, and eventually closes without trace or error in the event logs. After setting the position to 0 0 it was fine. Thought I had a virus - thankfully not. Cheers man.

I see that on my laptop. I find that it's associated with my dual monitors.
The OS and Video drivers get confused between when I use the laptop at home
with just the laptop display and when I connect it to work. The VPC window
is opening off screen, and I just have to right click on the VPC window and
using the nView option to send the application window to the appropriate
display window.

That worked great. I am using Vista, so the file was a little difficult to find. For the rest of you...

C:\Users\Username\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Virtual PC\Options.xml

Also, you can open the file with Notepad. Much easier to edit.
